Is this the face of a baby snatcher?

Apparently so!

Story:
We were camping this weekend and went swimming at a large public pool on Saturday.  There were some families there, but it was actually pretty quiet, not too full.

We were having a great time all in the water together.  There was a couple with a newborn baby, and two boys in life jackets that got in.  Maybe they were like 5 and 3.  Now I say newborn, and I mean newborn.

One of the boys was going crazy, terrified.
Momma takes screaming boy from the father... she now has newborn baby tucked under her arm, into her fat roll like a baguette, along with a screaming 5 year old in the other.  She lets go of the 5 year old and watches him scream reassuring him the he isn't drowning.

While she's taking him to the edge of the pool I make my way around and ask if I can hold her baby for her...

You would've thought that I was attacking her in a dark ally!
She flipped her head around then backed away from me w/o looking me in the eyes and in a very 'you are a crazy person' voice said... "I don't know you, no you can't hold my baby", maybe she said go away as well.

OH!!!  OK!!!!

"I just wondered if I could help you out at all" is what I said to her.

I looked around like... did anyone just see that?

I know that I'm baby hungry... does that read all over my face CRAZY BABY SNATCHER?  It must!

I was so annoyed, still am, although I'm starting to heal! :)

I just wanted to help and thought baby was the easiest way.

I know we live in a world where you have to wear ID in the hospital when you have a baby, and people do crazy things like smuggle kids out of theme parks... I know this... I watch my kids like a hawk!  But does that mean that we also live in a world where I can't help anyone?  And do you really yell at the lady with 4 kids, in a very public place?  I don't know?

Why did this bother me so much?
Later her friends did come and she had help.  I saw her talking to them, then looking at me.  Do you think she told them she went crazy on some innocent lady who was trying to be nice, or to watch your kids, there's a baby snatcher on the lose?

I don't know.  As I watched them leave I wanted to apologize for scaring her!  Instead I just watched her walk by, feeling annoyed that she thought I was crazy, and feeling sad that where she's from people are more likely to take babies than to simply want to help.

I guess you can't fault a mom for watching out for her kiddies.

Today is Tuesday and I finally updated my photography blog... CCMcAfee Photography The Blog
