Frozen Blood, Better Swimming, Fitness Friends Linkup

Florida must have made us a little crazy... it must have warmed us up a little too much!
All of my kids put on jackets to go to school today.  I had to remind them it was freezing, and snowing outside!
I decided to run outside today, why not?
I must be drunk with warmness too!  I put on a long sleeve top- fleece lined, then a little jacket.
I stepped outside, felt the wind, then changed my mind.  Nope!  Need a heavier jacket!
I took off, felt really good until I face the wind at mile 1.5.  Yowza!  Why the crap did I not wear my gloves?
I felt like my face was going to fall off, like my fingers were going to break off, leaving only stumps at the end of my arms!  It was biting!
Just 1.5 of that and everything was better!  Once the wind was at my back I could start to feel my body parts again and all was well!

I've been trying to get warm since though!  My blood is now Buffalo frozen again!  My thaw is gone!

I took all of my stuff to FL to run.  Do you run while on vacation?  I do, especially when that run is in the warm sunshine of which I've been starved.

However, with all of the walking we did in FL I wanted nothing to do with running!  My legs and feet and body were so exhausted each day!

I did swim though, so glad I brought my goggles, suit and cap.  It was the perfect workout for my tired body.
I am growing to love swimming more and more, the better I get at it, the easier it is and I love it!

I've been spending more time in the pool lately, since we got our JCC membership.

I've been trying to get better, not really knowing what makes that a reality!
I've been told that my head needs to face the bottom of the pool, that it will bring my legs up to make my kicking more effective.  Problem with that is as I turn my head to breathe at that particular angle water goes up my nose.  Don't love that.  So, I've been keeping my head slightly lifted (between these two options below), so the water hits at my hairline, I can feel my legs drop a little.
BUT, I've found if I can pull my core in, which sways my back less, it brings my legs up.  That is what I've been working on.

The other thing I've naturally been working on is my reach.  I find as I reach farther forward with each stroke it turns my hips... ahhhh I get it now, this is what everyone is talking about.  I didn't get it before, but now I do!  I didn't realize how far swimmers hips turn with this stroke.  I'll be practicing.

I recently looked for some tips for better freestroke swimming and found this...10 elements of perfect stroke.
It has some great tips, check it out!

As I was swimming last week I was thinking that breathing while you swim is the direct opposite of breathing while you're running.

When things get tough running, as muscles work hard, they need oxygen.  I practice taking air in with three steps, then exhaling with one.  3 to 1.  It paces me, gives me energy and keeps my rhythm strong.

Swimming you have one stroke to get a breath, then three strokes to let it out.  Much harder!  You need oxygen for those working muscles and in water it's hard to get all you need in one breath!  In fact I can't do it at all!  I can while I warm up, but for the rest of my swim I breathe 1 in and 1 out.  One more thing to work on right?

I don't intend to be a pro swimmer, but I do want to be efficient.  I want to perform to the best of my ability and that includes knowledge for whatever discipline I train at.  When I swim, and race a triathlon again, I want to be a better swimmer than I was the last time.  I already am!  Can't wait to see where I get to!
