I'm running low...

On creative titles that is!
Not much to share, so hows about a journaling prompt...

Thinking back, was there a teacher(s) class that had a great influence on you?

Well, I have to say that being in my first grade class would later present me with much opportunity. I can't say that I was greatly 'influenced' in that particular class, but I did have a great teacher, Miss Williams, of which I connected to.

I was the teachers pet. I stuck by her side and cleaned her chalkboard, organized her desk top and checked finished work. I can still hear her saying the word 'folks' to us little people. I can still see her ruler striking the table as she kept us all in rhythm during reading group. She ran an orderly classroom, printed with perfection, and apparently struck a chord in my little six year old heart!

She remembered me and I her. When I was in the sixth grade she offered me my first after school job. I went back to her classroom everyday for an hour and cleaned, graded papers, organized and helped how I could. She would pay me $1 and I felt pretty responsible!

I kept working with Miss Williams until I went away to college! As we worked side by side in her classroom and later in her home we became friends. I got to know my 'teacher' on a different level. She gave me my first opportunities to work and I have learned invaluable lessons from that. And, other than a clean classroom and a clean house, I believe I gave her opportunities too. She never married or had children, but I felt her love in a motherly way as she took such good care of me. I hope she felt rewarded too.

Just this past Sunday I gave a lesson on working. It is a valuable principle that, with the conveniences of life, is sometimes looked down upon, dreaded and avoided. I thought about my own life and what I have learned through working. I have learned how to manage money, to take some burden from a struggling family, self sufficiency, integrity, confidence and empowerment, all from the opportunity to work. It has helped form my character.

So, even though I don't remember specific lessons learned during my first grade in school. I have been greatly influenced by it and by the woman who taught it. Thanks Linda!
